What Is Beam

Beam is a structural member sufficiently long as compared to its lateral dimensions, supported at certain points. along its length and subjected to loads transverse to its longitudinal axis is called a beam.

Beams is located below the roof.The roof load is transferred to the beam which gets supported by two columns beams are traditionally descriptions of buildings or civil engineering structural elements.

Beam is a structural elements that carries load from slabs and also direct loads,such as masonry walls and their self weight.The beams may be supported on the other beams or may be supported by columns forming on integral part of the frame. Beam is used to resist horizontal , vertical and shear load.

Beam is a horizontal structure member used to carry vertical load, shear load and sometime horizontal load. It is the major component of building structure.It mainly used in the construction of bridges, trusses and other structures which carry vertical load or horizontal load.

 

Any structure which cross-section is much smaller compare to its length and undergoes lateral load known as beam.

1). Based on Type of Supports and end Supports

 

Based on types of supports and end support there are 6 Types of Beams Used in Construction.

 

a).  Simply supported Beam

 

The beams which are resting freely on supports at it both ends are known as simply supported beams.

Simply supported beam is  supported at both ends, means beam which is supported or formed to stand freely on supports at its both ends. One end of beam is supported by hinge support and other end by roller support or simply you can say It is the type of beam which rest on the two supports. This supports allow to the horizontal  movements of beam. It beam type undergoes both shear stress and bending moment.

 

 

 

Types of Beams Used in Construction

 

The beam is similar to simply supported beam – except  more than two supports are used on it.The beam which is supported by more than two supports or continuous over more than two supports is known as continuous support or continuous beam.

The one end of beam is supported by hinge support and roller support at the other end one or more supports are used between 2 ends. It is used in long concrete bridges where length of bridges is too large.

 

b). Continuous Beam 

 

The one end of beam is supported by hinge support and roller support at the other end one or more supports are used between 2 ends. It is used in long concrete bridges where length of bridges is too large.

c). Over Hanging Beam

 

Over hanging beams are the combination of simply supported beams and cantilever beams.Due to one or both ends of this beam is overhanging,this beam is called overhanging beam.

 

If the end portion of the beam is extended beyond the support such beams are known as overhanging beam ,means it is a beam when a cantilever portion is hanging out of a simply supported beam. It can have any number of supports or simply you can say it is the type of beam which is supported by 2 support but hanging on both ends. this type of beam is mostly used in construction.

 

It is the combination of simply supported beam and cantilever beam.

d). Cantilever Beam 

 

This is a popular type of beam mostly used in trusses, bridges and other structures.

Cantilever beam is the beam which is fixed at one end and unsupported or free at the other end means it supported only one end but fixed support. Cantilever beam carries the load and transfer it to the supports in form of moment and shear force. This beam mostly used in residential building.

e). Propped Cantilever Beam

 

If a beam is fixed at one end and other end is supported by a roller support, means the free end of the cantilever beam is placed on the roller support  the beam is known as propped cantilever beam . A propped cantilever beam is a little modification of the cantilever beam,if the free end of the cantilever beam is place on a roller support than the beam will be propped cantilever beam.

 

f). Fixed Beam 

 

The beams which are fixed at it both ends are known as fixed beams.It is commonly used in trusses and other structure.

The beam which is fixed from both ends means the beams is inflexible at both ends in order that the slope at the ends become zero, it is known as fixed beam. The fixed end produced fixing moments there other than the reactions, If perfect end fixing is obtained, then fixed beam bear smaller deflection. Fixed beam is also known as built in beam.

Examples are R C C Beam in framed structure.

 

2).According to cross section

 

Based and according to cross section there are 2 Types of Beams Used in Construction.

 

a). I Beam 

The beam with I shaped as H shaped cross section is known as I Beam. The horizontal elements of I are known as “Flanges” and the vertical elements is known as “Web”.

It is designed to be good load carrying structural members. It is usually used in a simply supported configuration.

b). T-Beam 

The beam with T-shape of cross section is known as T – Beam. It is simply a rectangular beam construct monolithic – ally with the slab shaped as T. The beam consist of a flange and a rib in the form of at T. The tap part of the slab which acts along the beam to resist the compressive stress is known as “flange”and the part which lies below the slab resist the shear stress is known as “Rib”.

3). According to Equilibrium Conditions

 

Based and according to Equilibrium conditions there are 2 Types of Beams Used in Construction.

 

a). Statically determinate Beam 

 

A beam is called determinate beam, if it can be analyzed by the basic equilibrium conditions. The support reactions can be  find by using basic equilibrium conditions. These conditions are summation of all horizontal forces is zero, summation of all vertical force is zero. Summation of all moments is zero.

 

Example:- Simply supported beam, Cantilever beam.etc.

 

b). Statically indeterminate beam

 

If the beam cannot be analyzed by using basic equilibrium conditions known as statically indeterminate beam. The end reaction find out by using basic equilibrium conditions with combination of other conditions like strain energy method, virtual work method etc.

4). According to Geometry 

 

Based and according to Geometry there are 3 Types of Beams Used in Construction.

 

a). Straight Beam

 

Straight beam are the horizontal members used to support vertically applied loads across an opening. Straight beam carries only bending moment & Shear force.

b). Curved Beam 

 

A beam whose geometric shape is formed by the motion in space of a plane figures .i.e cross-section and its center of gravity always follows a certain curve is known as curve beam.

Curve beam carries bending moment, shear force and torsional moment. Torsional moment appears due to beams gravity.It centro-id of geometry ( C.G ) does not lie on its length. Resultant force acting on C.G creates the torsional moment at beam supported.

c). Tapered Beam 

 

Beam with tapered cross-section is known of tapered beam.A tapered beam subjected to a tip bending load will be analyzed in order to predict the distributions of stress and displacement in the beam.
